Elizabeth Henderson, M.E.Des.
Chief Sustainability Strategist

Elizabeth Henderson is an experienced hospitality and meetings industry practitioner with a specialization in sustainability.As the Director of Corporate Social Responsibility for the meetings industry’s largest professional association, she developed groundbreaking sustainability education for the industry, achieved a global first for the events industry with 3rd-party certification under sustainable event standards, and authored tools and sustainability reports.

She is currently involved with the creation of sustainability reporting guidelines through the internationally recognized Global Reporting Initiative, and the creation of sustainability management standards for the meetings industry through the development of ISO 20121.  She ensures that current sustainability issues relevant to the industry are consistent with globally accepted environmental, economic and community practices, and brings ease of understanding and application to all projects.

Elizabeth holds a Master’s in Environmental Science, a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary, and two industry designations, the Certification in Meetings Management (CMM) and Certified Meeting Professional (CMP). She is currently completing her MBA at the Haskayne School of Business.

Mariela McIlwraith, MBA

Mariela McIlwraith specializes in business strategy, economics and corporate responsibility. She has over 15 years of experience  and has worked in both Canada and the United States. She has consulted, presented, taught and written articles in the areas of marketing, corporate responsibility, ethics, hybrid meetings, gamification and pricing. Mariela completed her Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Sauder School of Business at UBC. As part of her studies, she completed research on volunteer engagement, business strategy, change management and business ethics.

She holds a Certification in Meeting Management (CMM) and is a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP). She is a Past Chair of the Content Advisory Council for Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and a Past President of the MPI British Columbia Chapter. She has served as a Trustee of the GMIC Sustainable Meetings Foundation.

Mariela is the co-author of Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility in the Meetings and Events Industry, a part of the Wiley Event Series, and is the Executive Editor of the Convention Industry Council Manual, 9th Edition, to be published in the fall of 2013.

Mariela speaks English and Spanish fluently.
